The Alpine Spa - Bürgenstock Resort presents itself as an impressive place of retreat at an altitude of 1,100 m with a breathtaking view of Lake Lucerne in the middle of the Swiss Alps. The lighting concept planned by Licht Kunst Licht carefully and effectively underlines the architectural interventions of the Berlin architects Dierks & Sachs. In cooperation with plus4930 Architektur and the London interior architects MKV Design, the existing building from the 1950s was extensively renovated and expanded.

On three levels with a total of 7,000 m², the Alpine Spa invites you to relax exclusively in indoor and outdoor pools, various saunas, cold and warm pools, a quiet and quiet room, private spa suites and individual treatment rooms, a fitness area and a restaurant.

About an hour's drive from Zurich, the Alpine Spa - Bürgenstock Resort is in an exposed location on the Bürgenberg in the middle of a picturesque landscape. After almost six years of construction and renovation, the resort now houses three other hotels in addition to the spa in alpine seclusion and an elegant, luxurious ambience. The lighting for the outdoor areas of the entire resort was also designed by Licht Kunst Licht.Spectacular entrance to the world of wellbeing

The guest first enters the spa via a tunnel that digs deep into the mountain and invites on the way through to get to know the history of the resort and the surrounding area in a temporary exhibition. The display cabinets flanking the sides are illuminated on the one hand in an integrated manner, on the other hand via spotlights. In addition to the exhibition lighting along the tunnel walls, powerful points of light on the tunnel floor point the way towards the elevators, which take the guest into the world of the spa on the floors above.

Immersion in water and atmospheric light

Via a reception area and changing rooms, guests reach the heart of the Alpine Spa - the indoor pool. During the day, the spacious room is lavishly flooded with vital daylight and sunlight.

"In the evenings and at night, the underwater lights built into the side ensure that the surface of the water becomes a shimmering light source and a relaxed and cozy atmosphere is created," explains project manager Martina Weiss (light, art, light) and goes into even greater detail: " In order to meet the demands on the light depending on the time of day, we have therefore generated three light scenes: day, twilight and evening hours. ”Wall lights on the steel supports along the long sides of the pool give the high room a rhythm with atmospheric direct and indirect lighting. The historical, massive stone walls, on the other hand, are subtly emphasized in their texture by grazing light.

Subdued light for saunas and relaxationA connecting staircase leads down to the sauna area with cold and warm pools and the relaxation rooms. A rippling wall of water accompanies the stairs and creates an appealing play of light by setting it in scene using narrow-beam surface-mounted lights.

"Especially in the area of ??the saunas, indirect lighting using coves and integrated lighting elements should offer guests the greatest possible comfort," says Martina Weiss, explaining the importance of soft and warm light for a harmonious and calming backdrop in the spa. For the numerous cold and warm water basins, an elaborate step detail with integrated lighting was specially developed for the project. Above all, the tightness and resistance to chlorinated water presented a major challenge.Old and new in interplay. In contrast to the massive stone facades of the historical building fabric, the architects developed a copper-zinc sheet facade for the parts of the new building, which shimmers gold in the light and gives the spa building freshness and lightness. The external effect of the spa after dusk occurs only through the carefully coordinated interior lighting, which can be seen against the night sky through the generous glass surfaces.

For the entire complex of the resort, a custom-made lamp was developed based on the former, historical mast lamps. Timelessly designed mast lights made of solid bronze accompany the walkways and driveways on the site in two sizes. In several sampling cycles, a special light optic with the use of a bronze mesh was developed, with which extremely warm, cozy light shows the visitor the way.
